Medicaid Documents Checklist โ South Dakota
South Dakota Medicaid is decided on documents, and the list is shorter than most people expect: there is no asset or resource test for income-based (MAGI) South Dakota Medicaid, so no bank statements, no car valuations and no look-back on savings. South Dakota expanded Medicaid, so income is the whole test for adults 19โ64: at or below 138% of the federal poverty level, about $1,732 a month for one person and $2,969 for a household of three. Below is exactly what South Dakota DSS will ask you to produce.
Documents South Dakota will ask you for
You do not need all of these before you file โ filing early protects your start date โ but every one of them will be requested before a decision is made.
1. Proof of identity
A South Dakota driver's licence, state ID or passport for each person applying. A birth certificate works for children.
2. Social Security numbers
Required for every person who is applying for coverage, but not for household members who are only counted for household size. A non-applicant parent does not have to give one.
3. Proof of citizenship or immigration status
A US passport or a birth certificate proves both identity and citizenship at once. Lawfully present immigrants generally serve a five-year wait for full South Dakota Medicaid, though children and pregnant women are exempt in many states โ and emergency Medicaid covers labour, delivery and emergency care regardless of status.
4. Proof that you live in South Dakota
A lease, utility bill or piece of official mail. South Dakota Medicaid is state residency, not citizenship of the state โ you qualify from the day you intend to stay, with no waiting period.
5. Current income for everyone in your tax household
Pay stubs, a benefit award letter, or self-employment records. South Dakota Medicaid uses MAGI โ your tax household, not the people under your roof โ so a roommate's income is irrelevant and a tax dependant's counts. The limit is $2,969 a month for a household of three at 138% of poverty.
6. Details of any other health coverage
An employer plan, a Marketplace policy or Medicare. Having other coverage does not automatically disqualify you; South Dakota Medicaid can pay second, and people on Medicare should also be screened for the Medicare Savings Programs.
7. Medical bills from the last three months, if you have them
South Dakota Medicaid coverage can be backdated up to three months before the month you applied, as long as you were eligible then. Unpaid bills from that window are the reason to file even if you no longer need care today.
8. Proof of a qualifying category, if you are not income-eligible on your own
Pregnancy, disability, being 65+, or having children each open a separate South Dakota Medicaid pathway with its own, higher income limit โ apply under the one that fits rather than assuming a single number.

What South Dakota will NOT ask you for
- No asset or resource test. Income-based South Dakota Medicaid eligibility has had no asset limit since 2014, so savings, a car or a house do not disqualify you. (Long-term-care and 65+/disabled pathways are the exception and do count assets.)
- No open-enrolment window. Unlike a Marketplace plan, you can apply for South Dakota Medicaid on any day of the year, and coverage starts the first day of the month you applied.
- No premium in most cases, and no cost for children's preventive care. Cost-sharing where it exists is capped at 5% of household income.
Filing and timing in South Dakota
- Apply through SD DSS online application (dss.sd.gov), run by South Dakota DSS, or by phone on 877-999-5612.
- South Dakota has 45 days to decide most South Dakota Medicaid applications and 90 days when a disability determination is needed; 15โ45 days is the normal range in practice.
- Apply for children separately even if you are denied. Children are covered far above the adult limit through South Dakota Medicaid and CHIP in every state, South Dakota included, and a household denial does not carry over to them.
- If you are turned down on income, the Marketplace will quote a subsidised plan and your South Dakota Medicaid denial itself opens a special enrolment period.
Medicaid documents: common questions in South Dakota
What documents do I need to apply for Medicaid in South Dakota?
South Dakota DSS asks for photo ID, Social Security numbers for each person applying, proof of citizenship or lawful immigration status, proof of your South Dakota address, and current income for everyone in your tax household. Bring unpaid medical bills from the last three months as well โ South Dakota Medicaid can backdate coverage that far. You do not need bank statements: there is no asset test for income-based South Dakota Medicaid.
Does South Dakota Medicaid have an asset or savings limit?
Not for income-based (MAGI) South Dakota Medicaid, which is how adults, children, parents and pregnant women qualify. Savings, a car and a home do not count, and there is no look-back period. Asset limits still apply to the pathways for people who are 65+, blind or disabled, and to long-term-care and nursing home coverage.
Can South Dakota Medicaid pay medical bills from before I applied in South Dakota?
Yes, in most cases. South Dakota Medicaid retroactive coverage reaches back up to three months before the month of application, provided you would have been eligible during those months. Ask for retroactive coverage explicitly on the application and attach the bills โ it is not granted automatically.
What is the Medicaid income limit in South Dakota and when can I apply?
South Dakota covers adults 19โ64 at or below 138% of the federal poverty level โ about $1,732 a month for one person and $2,969 for three. There is no enrolment window: apply any day of the year, and coverage runs from the first of the month you applied.
