Medicaid Documents Checklist โ Mississippi
Mississippi Medicaid is decided on documents, and the list is shorter than most people expect: there is no asset or resource test for income-based (MAGI) Mississippi Medicaid, so no bank statements, no car valuations and no look-back on savings. Mississippi did not expand Medicaid, which changes what you have to prove. A parent or caretaker is measured against roughly 27% of poverty โ about $581 a month for three people โ and an adult with no dependent children generally cannot qualify at any income unless they are pregnant, disabled or 65+. Expect Mississippi to ask for proof of a qualifying category, not just income. Below is exactly what Mississippi Division of Medicaid will ask you to produce.
Documents Mississippi will ask you for
You do not need all of these before you file โ filing early protects your start date โ but every one of them will be requested before a decision is made.
1. Proof of identity
A Mississippi driver's licence, state ID or passport for each person applying. A birth certificate works for children.
2. Social Security numbers
Required for every person who is applying for coverage, but not for household members who are only counted for household size. A non-applicant parent does not have to give one.
3. Proof of citizenship or immigration status
A US passport or a birth certificate proves both identity and citizenship at once. Lawfully present immigrants generally serve a five-year wait for full Mississippi Medicaid, though children and pregnant women are exempt in many states โ and emergency Medicaid covers labour, delivery and emergency care regardless of status.
4. Proof that you live in Mississippi
A lease, utility bill or piece of official mail. Mississippi Medicaid is state residency, not citizenship of the state โ you qualify from the day you intend to stay, with no waiting period.
5. Current income for everyone in your tax household
Pay stubs, a benefit award letter, or self-employment records. Mississippi Medicaid uses MAGI โ your tax household, not the people under your roof โ so a roommate's income is irrelevant and a tax dependant's counts. The limit is $581 a month for a household of three at 27% of poverty.
6. Details of any other health coverage
An employer plan, a Marketplace policy or Medicare. Having other coverage does not automatically disqualify you; Mississippi Medicaid can pay second, and people on Medicare should also be screened for the Medicare Savings Programs.
7. Medical bills from the last three months, if you have them
Mississippi Medicaid coverage can be backdated up to three months before the month you applied, as long as you were eligible then. Unpaid bills from that window are the reason to file even if you no longer need care today.
8. Proof of a qualifying category, if you are not income-eligible on your own
In Mississippi this matters more than anywhere: without expansion, pregnancy, disability, age 65+ or dependent children are what create a pathway at all. Bring the proof โ a pregnancy confirmation, an SSA award letter, or your children's birth certificates.

What Mississippi will NOT ask you for
- No asset or resource test. Income-based Mississippi Medicaid eligibility has had no asset limit since 2014, so savings, a car or a house do not disqualify you. (Long-term-care and 65+/disabled pathways are the exception and do count assets.)
- No open-enrolment window. Unlike a Marketplace plan, you can apply for Mississippi Medicaid on any day of the year, and coverage starts the first day of the month you applied.
- No premium in most cases, and no cost for children's preventive care. Cost-sharing where it exists is capped at 5% of household income.
Filing and timing in Mississippi
- Apply through MDHS online application (medicaid.ms.gov), run by Mississippi Division of Medicaid, or by phone on 800-948-3050.
- Mississippi has 45 days to decide most Mississippi Medicaid applications and 90 days when a disability determination is needed; 15โ45 days is the normal range in practice.
- Apply for children separately even if you are denied. Children are covered far above the adult limit through Mississippi Medicaid and CHIP in every state, Mississippi included, and a household denial does not carry over to them.
- If you are turned down because Mississippi has no expansion pathway and your income is at least 100% of poverty, the Marketplace will offer a heavily subsidised plan instead. Below that, ask a federally qualified health centre about sliding-scale care.
Medicaid documents: common questions in Mississippi
What documents do I need to apply for Medicaid in Mississippi?
Mississippi Division of Medicaid asks for photo ID, Social Security numbers for each person applying, proof of citizenship or lawful immigration status, proof of your Mississippi address, and current income for everyone in your tax household. Bring unpaid medical bills from the last three months as well โ Mississippi Medicaid can backdate coverage that far. You do not need bank statements: there is no asset test for income-based Mississippi Medicaid.
Does Mississippi Medicaid have an asset or savings limit?
Not for income-based (MAGI) Mississippi Medicaid, which is how adults, children, parents and pregnant women qualify. Savings, a car and a home do not count, and there is no look-back period. Asset limits still apply to the pathways for people who are 65+, blind or disabled, and to long-term-care and nursing home coverage.
Can Mississippi Medicaid pay medical bills from before I applied in Mississippi?
Yes, in most cases. Mississippi Medicaid retroactive coverage reaches back up to three months before the month of application, provided you would have been eligible during those months. Ask for retroactive coverage explicitly on the application and attach the bills โ it is not granted automatically.
Who can actually qualify for Medicaid in Mississippi?
Mississippi has not expanded Medicaid, so income alone is not enough. Parents and caretakers qualify at roughly 27% of poverty (about $581 a month for three people), and pregnancy, disability and age 65+ each open their own pathway with a higher limit. An adult under 65 with no children and no disability generally cannot qualify at any income โ that is the coverage gap. Children, however, are covered well above the adult limit, so apply for them regardless.
