How the Federal Poverty Level Works
The Federal Poverty Level (FPL) is a measure of income issued annually by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). It's used to determine eligibility for many federal and state benefit programs.
Your FPL percentage is calculated by dividing your annual household income by the poverty guideline for your household size, then multiplying by 100. For example, if the FPL for a family of 4 is $31,200 and your income is $46,800, your FPL percentage is 150%.
